The last week has been an awesome one for mid-island fishermen. We have big Chinook holding waiting for rain, Coho absolutely everywhere, and Pinks on the beach. So there are opportunities for everybody right now.
There have been some huge Chinook lately. One customer showed me a photo of a 38lb Chinook (not the one in the photo above) caught on 5" Blue Plug that I had recommended to him the day before. Large spoons like Big-E Black Herring (it's actually purple) are also working well. Best colours have been purple and blue. The hot flasher has been Jelly UV Purple Glow. Run it as a dummy flasher when fishing plugs or the big spoons.
French creek has been hot for big Chinook too. But troll right on the bottom in 200-250ft of water. This is painfully deep, but it's producing lot's of big fish.
The Coho have been hot just about everywhere. That being said they move around day to day, so if you are not getting hits look for bait or feeding birds to get back on them. Our Harbour Chandler designed Skinny G spoon Squiggle Blue has been the top Coho spoon lately.
In Nanaimo the Pink salmon are in Departure Bay. Fish pink fly's under a small float, pink spinners like Prime Lures "Clean Up Crew" or Lil' Nib Humpy Specials. There is a legal requirement in for hooks for this fisheries. Hooks must be single Barbless, and have a size measurement of no bigger than 15mm point to shank. Or just buy the Humpy Special which has the correct size hook.
