Nanaimo Halibut?!?

Nanaimo Halibut?!?

Written by Steve Vavrik |

There have been a handful of halibut caught around the mid Island area in the last week. A couple near Thrasher Rock and some closer to Nanoose. While this is fairly unusual, it does happen. Most halibut here are caught by mistake when people are trolling close to the bottom. Trolling a Rapala Otus or Big Spin and Glows would be a good way to cover ground when you are looking for your new secrt halibut spot. Or if you have a spot white Berkley Power Bait Grubs are a proven hali lure. Or try pounding the bottom withe a P-Line Drop Jig slathered in Pro Cure Butt Juice.

If anyone has more info on halibut around Nanaimo, or wants to share a photo email me at the address below. I only share as much info as the fishermen wishes. Hence the rather vague locations mentioned above.

The Chinook fishing has been a bit quieter this week. The morning bite has been strong but the evening one less so. They are still sticking tight to the bottom in deep water. Glow plugs are still working well, but I'm seeing more needlefish spoons working too. The Lure Jenson Koho King in Hog Wild Glow has been very effective. Pair this with a glow flasher like Hot Spots Anchovy Moon Jelly, and troll close to the bottom.

I'm getting some good reports from French creek so I except more fish to head our way soon. Plugs are still working the best there. Try 5-6" Gamechanger and run it with a double glow black flasher to bring the fish in.

I'm also hearing that there are squid in Nanaimo Harbour right now. And that people are jigging them with glow squid jigs from the public fishing dock. Only one report so far so if you go please drop me an email.

Tips up! 🎣
