Chinook Season Is here!

Chinook Season Is here!

Steve Vavrik |

Chinook season has started with a bang here in Georgia Strait! There are lot's of Chinook around in the "slot" size that you can keep. And there are also now some oversized big fish showing up too. The picture above this post is the biggest local fish I've seen so far this season. Caught and released this week by the Kelter crew. This fish measured 110cms or 43 inches!

It's been so windy I don't have a lot of reports, but the people getting out have done well. Skinny G Trailhead behind a Green Footloose flasher has been one setup I've heard was producing. 140-180 seemed to be the best depth, but some Springs came from shallower mixed in with the Coho at 100ft.

Big plugs like Green Meanie are still working well, as are UV Purple Haze hoochies. Particularly around French Creek. Purple always seems to work there starting mid-summer or so.

There have been less clipped Coho around Five Finger Island. They seem to have moved out to the East Side of Gabriola. Try Entrance Island of Thrasher Rock for Coho right now. The top Coho lure has been 3.5" Phat-E Spoons in Blue Haze behind a Blue Magoo Flasher.

In Alberni the Sockeye seem to be tailing off, but the big Chinook are showing up all throughout Barkley Sound but nut in the canal yet.
