It's been another week with lot's of herring and more big Chinook showing up to feed on them.
My son and I got out this weekend with my herring jigs and throw net and caught a bunch. The herring were very big this year and we had a blast even though it was cold. I smoked some of the herring, and harvested their roe. The smoked herring is very good, once you remove the small bones. I dusted the roe with flour and fried it. The smoked herring and roe where delicious on bread, and in a salad.
The Nanaimo spawn may tail off now, but the French Creek spawn has just started. So get out there while you can.
For salmon fishing a lot of bigger fish have been moving in. Multiple fish in the high teens were caught from French Creek all the way down to Sidney. Entrance Island and Porlier Pass where the hot locations. You can match the herring they are feeding on with a 3.5 Big Eye Glow Back Herring Aid. Or take the opposite approach and use a lure that will stand out from all the herring. If you want to use this technique try the brightest and most contrasting lure you can find. A UV Watermelon spoon would be an excellent choice.
Another good choice would be the hoochie OG153R. This has long been a favorite of commercial trollers. It's an ugly dog's breakfast of colours, but it works.
Top flasher of the week has been Mad Moon This is a great looking flasher from Hot Spot, and I think I'll be using it a lot more in the future.
