Everybody is gearing up for Coho opening on June 1st! The forecast is looking great with lot's of good sized Coho moving throughout Georgia Strait. Entrance Island and Five Fingers are looking like the current hotspots. Initial reports from French Creek and Nanoose are mixed. But Coho move around, so you never know from day to day.
West Coast Tackle has a brand new series of spoons called the Super Mini Series. The 2.0 Super Mini Superman spoon from this series has already proven that it's a winner in early testing. It's looking like it will be a top Coho spoon for this season.
Gibbs also has a cool new spoon that looks like a great Coho spoon. It's the Shimmer Series Skinny G in Maverick pattern. I love Maverick pattern, mostly because we designed it and I named it. But it's a top colour pattern for Coho and Chinook.
We also had a Chrome flasher made in the Maverick pattern for this season. It's got a lot of flash and should work very well for Coho and shallow Chinook. We went with all chrome and no glow so this is a 100ft deep or less type flasher. Remember, running glow in shallow water is not ideal unless it's early/late in the day. I much prefer chrome or mirror flashers for Coho. It's not on the website yet, and probably will sell out before we get it up. So email me if you want one.
Last years top two Coho flashers were Brain Freeze for deeper fish, and our custom Blue Mirror for the shallower ones.
If you don't want to run spoons the other top lures from last season were Blue Meanie Hoochie for Coho and Chinook. And for shallow fishing the Fish Candy UV Blue Flash Fly. The flash fly is similar to a buck tail, and can be fished on the surface in the same way, or fished like a hoochie. It's extremely flashy, and very effective.
It's looking good out there for Coho, which is great because they are my favorite salmon to catch and eat. Good luck out there!
Thanks to Tim Kelter for all the reports and the photo above this post. If you get out please send me an email, and even better a photo!
