Fly Tying Thread & Wire

Fly tying thread is used to secure materials to the hook while building artificial flies. Different thread sizes and strengths are used depending on the fly pattern, hook size, and target species.

Fly tying wire is commonly used for ribbing, adding weight, and reinforcing fly patterns. Wire can improve durability while also creating segmented bodies that imitate natural insects.

Smaller thread sizes are commonly used for delicate trout flies, while heavier thread is better suited for larger salmon, steelhead, and saltwater patterns. The best size depends on hook size and fly style.

Flat thread spreads out evenly for smooth wraps and less bulk, while round thread is tighter and stronger for securing heavier materials. Many fly tyers use both depending on the pattern being tied.

Yes, thread colour can affect the final appearance of a fly pattern. Some anglers match thread colour to the fly body, while others use contrasting colours to create hotspots or trigger points.

Fine wire is commonly used for trout flies, while heavier wire is often used for salmon and steelhead patterns that require extra durability and weight.

Yes, fly tying wire is often wrapped around the hook shank to help flies sink faster and reach deeper water when targeting trout, salmon, and steelhead.

The Harbour Chandler carries fly tying thread and wire for trout, salmon, and steelhead fly patterns, with options for freshwater and coastal fly fishing applications.
