Frequently Asked Questions
Mooching Reels Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is a mooching reel used for?
Mooching reels are designed for salmon fishing, especially when drifting or slow trolling bait like herring. They provide a direct drive feel and smooth drag, allowing anglers to control line and fight fish more effectively.
Q. What is the difference between a mooching reel and a conventional reel?
Mooching reels use a direct drive system with no gears, giving anglers more control and sensitivity. Conventional reels use gears and drag systems, while mooching reels offer a more hands-on fishing experience.
Q. What size mooching reel should I choose?
Most mooching reels range from 4 to 5.5 inches in diameter. Larger reels like 5" to 5-1/4" models provide faster line retrieval and are ideal for salmon fishing in deeper coastal waters.
Q. Are high speed mooching reels worth it?
Yes, high speed mooching reels allow for faster line retrieval, making it easier to reset lines and stay efficient when fishing deeper water or targeting active salmon.
Q. What features should I look for in a mooching reel?
Look for smooth drag systems, durable construction, corrosion resistance, and comfortable handles. High-quality bearings and a balanced spool also improve performance.
Q. Are mooching reels good for salmon fishing in BC?
Yes, mooching reels are a top choice for salmon fishing in British Columbia, especially for chinook and coho. They are widely used in coastal waters around Vancouver Island.
Q. What line should I use with a mooching reel?
Monofilament line is commonly used with mooching reels due to its stretch and shock absorption. Many anglers also use a fluorocarbon leader for better presentation.
Q. What brands of mooching reels do you carry?
We carry trusted brands like R3ef, Coast, Nautilus, and Amundson, offering a range of high-quality mooching reels in different sizes, colours, and configurations.
Q. Are mooching reels suitable for beginners?
Mooching reels can be used by beginners, but they require some practice to master. Once learned, they offer excellent control and a more engaging fishing experience.
Q. Can I use a mooching reel for trolling?
Yes, mooching reels are commonly used for slow trolling and drifting techniques. They are ideal for anglers who prefer a more controlled and hands-on approach to salmon fishing.
