Prawning Season Kicking Off

Prawning Season Kicking Off The Harbour Chandler

Steve Vavrik |

April is prawning season! Now is the time to get out there before the commercial season starts. The reports from the areas that have stayed open have been good. With larger prawns than we have seen for the last few years.

One of the keys to Georgia Strait prawning is weighting your traps. Put one of our 5lbs trap weight in each Bauer prawn trap, and one 5lb clip weight about 20ft away from the second trap on the string. Prawns get spooked by traps that move, and choppy water will jiggle your trap without the weights. The weight also keeps your traps in place. Many lost traps go missing due to the current dragging them into deeper water.

If you are using round traps it's a bit harder to weight them down. Our square weights don't really work. Personally I just zip tie several round 1lb wights around the bottom of the trap. Another good way it to wrap chain around the bottom of the trap, as in the photo above.

We have 500ft spliced prawn lines for fishermen north of Dodds Narrows. and 350ft of the same for fishermen to the south. Make sure you use the correct rope for your location. These prawn lines have 100ft of lead line to keep it underwater, and the rest is floating ground line that will float above the rocks on the seafloor to prevent snags.

For your prawn pellets, the number one tip it to soak them in Prawn Syrup the night before. This puts out a nice cloud of scent to drawn prawns in from farther away.

We have a super sale on Scotty Trap Pullers. It's not the price on the website, so email or call me if you are interested.

Tips up! 🎣
