The annual herring spawn has kicked off. We have had big spawn around Comox earlier this week. And as of today the commercial fleet is fishing by Denman Island. The spawn will move down the coast over the next few days. It will hit French Creek soon and might make it to Nanaimo by this weekend, but only time will tell.
We have all the Sabiki jigs you might need to catch your own supply of bait for the year. I will be out looking on Sunday. Although I harvest them for their delicious eggs. So I recommend using the eggs of any females you catch.
The herring are extra large this year so big spoons like Herring Aid Looney Spoons, or big plugs like Yakama Silver Feeder Spinfish or a 6" T-Rex Tomic will work for Chinook while these mature herring are around. The best flashers have been Madi and Chartreus Squiggle
For salmon fishing I've had good reports from Entrance Island, and down along Gabriola to Thrasher Rock. Most fish are still coming from 200ft or more down. Although I have heard of a few more guys doing well in closer and shallower. So it sounds like there are starting to be fish everywhere right now.
The Loggers Derby on the West Coast went well. Lot's of larger than normal Chinook were taken. Top lures out there have been the classic OAL 12R hoochies and Army Truck Spoons.
Here in the store we just got in the new West Coast Tackle Superhero series spoons. They look awesome, and have a good clearcoat, so they should hold up really well. Also the manufacture is already sold out, so get yours soon.
