The lovely warm calm weather has got a lot of fishermen out on the water this week. If your boat is put away for the winter you are missing one of our best times of year for salmon fishing. It's open for two Chinook a day and they are very easy to catch at this portion of their life cycle. Unlike late season Chinook that sometimes seem to develop "lock jaw", the feeder springs out there right now will hit just about anything. Although large spoons like Coyotes 6" Fluorescent Glo Green and plugs like 6" Game Changer have been the best lures lately. Part of that is we are trying to target the larger fish with larger lures. There are loads of smaller Chinook moving through Georgia Strait, so larger lures will help reduce how many small fish you pick up. I talked to one fisherman on Thursday that was using herring strip and he said he was into something like 70 Chinook in one trip near Porlier Pass. Now that sounds like a lot of exercise. But it also sounds like we are going to have a great year with huge Chinook returns.
The top flashers have been Hot Spot Mady Anchovy and Gibbs Black Glow.
We are also seeing Coho showing up. If you catch (and release) any Coho please let me know via the email below. I'm not seeing as many as last year just yet, but their numbers are increasing.
Crabbing reports have also been really good lately. This is a nice change from the last few years. We have a wide range of crab traps and gear, plus the info you need to be successful.
