It has been a quiet week with the snow and only a few fishing reports coming in. With the cold weather only the heartiest of fishermen and women are heading out. However the wind has been calm and the fish are biting. Winter spring fishing has been picking up in most Georgia Straight locations. French Creek and Comox have both been reporting good sized Chinook. Glow Green Cuttlefish Hoochies and 602 Tomic Plugs have been taking the bigger fish. Around Nanaimo we still have loads of undersized fish mixed in with the bigger ones. Larger spoons like Looney Spoons in White Knight have been working and will help avoid some of the smaller fish. Another tip, if you are picking up lot's of shakers try running a dummy flasher rig or Crucifish off your cannon ball. Pair this with a large spoon. Without the flasher on your line you will be able to see if you are dragging a shaker much more easily. This is good for the small salmon and saves on wasted time for the fisherman.
The annual Sproat Loggers derby is coming up March 1-2nd. Purple Haze teaser heads, and Barkley Beast spoons paired with our custom Raspberry Gold Squiggle flasher. This limited edition flasher was designed by the Harbour Chandler staff specifically for the West Side of Vancouver Island.
In the local rivers is has been a bit spotty this week with water levels low and clear. Some steelhead are getting caught on silver casting spoons like 2/5oz Prime Lures and P-Line Pro-Steels. But be ready for when we get a snow to melt or rain. Things should really pick up then.
