Big Fish Showing Up!

Big Fish Showing Up!

Steve Vavrik |

It has been a week of big fish in Georgia Straight. The large Columbia white springs are still in our area. These fish are often in the high teens nd low twenty's. So if you want to hone your big fish skills now is your chance. Blue Glow Cop Car spoons, or White Glow Green Eye hoochies work for these big boys. The best flasher lately has been Black Glow Silver Prism. Normally these fish are around 200 ft. down and travel along the 800ft contour line on their journey south. This year people are getting them in shallower water and closer to shore. This means some of them may end up inside the gulf islands, and in the retention zone. Many of these fish are clipped, so the I'd be interested to hear from any Ladysmith or Crofton area fishermen if they are seeing these fish.

I have also had two fishermen come in this week who caught and released giant red snappers (yellow eye) while lingcod fishing. One was 30" and the other 36". It's great to see fish like this again, and a good reminder to always have a good quality rockfish descender and enough weight to get it down. Snappers are hard to sink, so you may need extra weights to descend them.

In the fresh water Bass fishing has been top notch. Local lakes are all doing well. Stick baits are still dominating. Try ZMan TRD in Canada Craw, or Crush City NED BLTs in Golby colour. Pair either of these stick baits with VMC Swingin' NED Rigs, or ZMan Pro Shroomz heads.
