Quick heads-up for Nanaimo boaters: at this time, The Harbour Chandler does not accept flare returns or disposal of expired flares. Sorry for the hassle! Here are a few safe options for your old flares in the meantime.
How to dispose of expired flares in Nanaimo
- Contact the flare's manufacturer or distributor. Check your packaging for the brand and ask them about returns.
- Call before dropping off anywhere. Most fire halls and waste facilities don't take flares, so always phone first.
- Store them safely in the meantime. Keep old flares in a sealed, labelled, waterproof container somewhere cool and dry, away from heat, kids and your in-date flares.
What not to do with old flares
- Don't put them in the garbage or recycling. It's a fire and explosion risk.
- Don't set them off. Lighting a flare when you're not in distress is illegal.
- Don't throw them overboard. Flares contain toxic chemicals that pollute the water.
