If you’re setting up a private mooring, Transport Canada requires all private mooring buoys to follow the same basic standards so they’re easy to identify on the water.
✅ Required Colour
Private mooring buoys must be white with a horizontal orange band around the middle.
✅ Required Markings
Your buoy must display:
-
Owner’s name
-
Owner’s phone number
-
Any local authorization/permit number, if applicable
Markings must be in black lettering and clearly visible above the waterline.
✅ Visibility
Your buoy must be large and bright enough to be seen in normal conditions. Reflective tape is recommended for night visibility.
✅ Mooring Hardware
Transport Canada doesn’t regulate the tackle itself, but for safe mooring most boaters use:
-
Heavy chain
-
Swivels & shackles
-
Concrete block or ground tackle suitable for their vessel size
✅ Check Local Rules
Some harbours and municipalities have additional requirements such as spacing, permits, or environmental restrictions.
