Transport Canada Mooring Buoy Requirements

Transport Canada Mooring Buoy Requirements

If you’re setting up a private mooring, Transport Canada requires all private mooring buoys to follow the same basic standards so they’re easy to identify on the water.

Required Colour

Private mooring buoys must be white with a horizontal orange band around the middle.

Required Markings

Your buoy must display:

  • Owner’s name

  • Owner’s phone number

  • Any local authorization/permit number, if applicable

Markings must be in black lettering and clearly visible above the waterline.

Visibility

Your buoy must be large and bright enough to be seen in normal conditions. Reflective tape is recommended for night visibility.

Mooring Hardware

Transport Canada doesn’t regulate the tackle itself, but for safe mooring most boaters use:

  • Heavy chain

  • Swivels & shackles

  • Concrete block or ground tackle suitable for their vessel size

Check Local Rules

Some harbours and municipalities have additional requirements such as spacing, permits, or environmental restrictions.
