Best BC Crab Traps Folding & Box Trap Guide

Crabbing’s one of the best (and cheapest) ways to enjoy fresh seafood on the BC coast. Drop a trap from the dock, a kayak, or your boat, and you’ve got a shot at dinner. The trick is having the right gear — it can be the difference between heading home with a full cooler or just a good story. In this guide, we’ll go over the most common trap styles for West Coast waters, the rules you’ll need to follow, and a few accessories that can make your trips more productive.

Folding Crab Traps

Folding crab traps are great if you just want to get out there and drop a line without lugging heavy gear around. They’re light, easy to stash, and pop open in seconds, which makes them perfect for quick trips or when you want to try a few different spots in one outing. Most come with escape rings and the right mesh size, so you’re good to go under BC rules. They tuck away nicely on a kayak, dinghy, or small boat, and are a solid choice for relaxed crabbing in calm waters.

Box Crab Traps

If you’re crabbing from a boat in deeper water or anywhere the current really moves, a box trap’s your best friend. They’re heavier than folding traps, so once you drop one, it stays put instead of drifting away. You can leave them soaking longer without worrying, and the solid doors do a great job of keeping crabs inside until you’re ready to pull them up. They’re a bit bulkier to haul around, but if you’re after a bigger haul, they’re worth the space.
